What is palo verde dam?

Palo Verde Dam, also known as Palo Verde Diversion Dam, is a concrete diversion dam located on the Colorado River in southwestern Arizona, near the border with California. The dam was constructed in 1958 to divert water from the river to the nearby Palo Verde Nuclear Generating Station, which is the largest nuclear power plant in the United States by net electricity production capacity and generates about 35% of the total electricity produced in Arizona. The dam has a height of 142 feet and a length of 1,063 feet. The water diverted by the dam is carried via a 13-mile-long canal to the power plant, where it is used for cooling purposes before being discharged back into the river. Palo Verde Dam also helps to regulate the flow of the Colorado River and provide irrigation water to surrounding agricultural lands.
